Patella Tendinitis

Patellar tendinitis, also known as jumper’s knee, is a condition that causes pain and inflammation in the tendon connecting the kneecap to the shinbone. It is common among athletes and individuals who engage in repetitive jumping or running activities. At Knee Pain Australia, we provide effective treatments to relieve pain and restore function, helping you get back to your active lifestyle.

Symptoms of Patella Tendinitis

Patellar tendinitis develops gradually and worsens over time. Common symptoms include:

Pain Below the Kneecap: Often worsens with activity, especially jumping, running, or squatting.

Swelling and Tenderness: The area around the patellar tendon may become inflamed and sensitive to touch.

Stiffness: Reduced flexibility and difficulty bending or straightening the knee.

Weakness in the Knee: A feeling of instability or reduced strength in the affected leg.

Pain After Exercise: Discomfort that lingers after physical activity or prolonged sitting.

If you’ve tried these options for Patella Tendinitis, but you have yet to find a long term solution, we advocate structured physical rehabilitation, following a personalised program created by a physio.

How we treat Patellar Tendinitis at Knee Pain Australia?

Patella tendinopathy requires a structured, evidence-based approach — not just generic rehab or passive treatments. We begin with isometric loading to reduce pain and improve tendon stiffness.

From there, we progress to eccentric exercises to stimulate tendon remodelling and collagen alignment. Once tolerance improves, we incorporate heavy slow resistance training to increase tendon thickness and compress collagen fibres for greater resilience.

Finally, we introduce plyometric work to retrain the tendon’s stretch-shortening cycle and restore elasticity for dynamic movements like jumping or sprinting. Each phase is tailored to your capacity and sport or activity demands.
